Rain or Shine spoils Brgy. Ginebra debut of Jamie Malonzo with 22-point rout

Yeng Guiao picked up his first win in his return to Rain or Shine after spending the last six seasons with NLEX and spoiled the Brgy. Ginebra debut of Jamie Malonzo via 22-point rout of the Gin Kings, 93-71, in the elimination round of the PBA Season 47 Commissioner’s Cup, Wednesday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Elasto Painters dropped 30 points in the second period while limiting the crowd darlings to only 5 which set the tone for the entire match. The Raymond Yu and Terry Que-owned franchise even led by as much as 32 points en route to their first win in the conference after a sorry loss to the Road Warriors last week.

Steve Taylor Jr. led the way for Rain or Shine with 21 points, 16 coming in the opening quarter, to go with 10 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal in 32 minutes of action.

“It feels good to come back from the loss the last time. Magandang bawi, malaking isda ang nahuli namin,” said Guiao during the post-game press conference.

“Mahirap mahuli ang Ginebra sa ganitong sitwasyon. It’s so rare that you caught them on their off night. Ginebra is an All-Star team especially with the addition of Jamie Malonzo. They’re gonna be scary in the near future. Sana (this win) is for real,” he added.

Leonard Santillan and Mike Nieto added 15 and 10 points, respectively while Anton Asistio and Andrei Caracut chipped in 9 markers each.

Justin Brownlee paced the crowd darlings with 20 points, 16 rebounds and 5 assists but could only convert 7 out of 25 attempts from the field for a measly 28% shooting clip.

Malonzo finished with 14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and a steal in almost 37 minutes of play while Nards Pinto and Christian Standhardinger added 9 markers apiece.

Scottie Thompson, who switched his jersey number from 6 to 9, missed all of his 4 attempts and finished with only 1 point. The reigning league MVP, however, had 10 boards and 2 assists.

The Gin Kings will try to bounce back when they take on playoffs rival Meralco on Sunday, October 2, 6:45pm at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
