Matthew Wright drained a clutch jumper with 5.1 seconds left to give Phoenix Pulse a pulsating 103-101 victory over Brgy. Ginebra in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup, Saturday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Wright’s timely hit, his 28th point for the game, came after Justin Brownlee tied the game at 101 by scoring off a steal from an errant pass by RJ Jazul.
The Gin Kings still had a chance to complete the stirring comeback but Brownlee missed a desperation heave from 3-point country.
“Talagang destined to win kami. Just have to give credit to the guys. Gustong gusto nilang manalo,” said Phoenix coach Louie Alas who was thrown out of the match in the 9-minute mark of the payoff period for continuous complaining.
Wright’s heroics preserved the superb game of import Eugene Phelps who finished with 27 points, 23 rebounds, 11 assists and 3 blocks.
Justin Chua chipped in 17 markers while Jazul contributed 10.
Brownlee, who missed all of his 8 attempts from long distance, finished with 25 points, 12 rebounds and 12 steals while LA Tenorio and Stanley Pringle added 20 and 19 points, respectively.
