Brgy. Ginebra rebounded strong from a sorry loss to defending champion San Miguel and demolished also-ran Terra Firma, 102-80, Monday night in the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup restart at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena and Cultural Center in Angeles City, Pampanga.
The Gin Kings, who came under fire after a lackluster performance against their struggling sister team, vented their ire on the hapless Dyip in a game that was all but decided in the second quarter after a furious run that broke the game wide open.
The win gave the league’s most popular squad an 8-3 win-loss record and with it the number 1 seed going into the playoffs of the compressed All-Filipino conference.
“We knew we didn’t play the last game. I knew that they want to bounce back and come back hard. We knew how important this game was for us,” said head coach Tim Cone during the post-game presser.
“We went to the San Miguel game, we talked about it being a twice-to-beat situation for us. Obviously, you don’t want to lose the first game because you don’t know what’s going to happen in the second one,” he added.
Japeth Aguilar paced the Gin Kings with 21 points while Aljon Mariano added a double-double of 17 points and 11 boards. Stanley Pringle chipped in 14 markers while Scottie Thompson narrowly missed a triple-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists.
Brgy. Ginebra will enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinal round against the team that ends up as the eighth seed.
